| Uplinking HD in Times Square. NHK's HD van is to the right and links to the DBS uplink with two cables: an IF feed from their encoders and a transcoded monitor feed. NHK built the van with several ideas in mind. Using proprietary equipment compatible with the needs of NHK in Tokyo, NHK's engineer in New York can design, integrate, configure and maintain the specialized equipment. The van is equipped with encoders, specialized test and measurement equipment, and video and audio production equipment specific to their needs. It also allows the van to arrive on-site earlier than the uplink truck when needed. The van can also be parked in the best position relative to the cameras, even if it is not where the uplink need park in order to "see" the satellite arc. The two vehicles need not be co-located. When covering events in other parts of the country, the van can be utilized with any digital ready uplink truck from another service provider. |
